What Were You Capable Of During Global Accessibility Awareness Day?

May 17th was the 7th edition of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). It might have gone unnoticed by many, as for many students and users of Learning Management Systems, issues and roadblocks are just part of their daily routine.

But as time goes by, issues are less and less common in some places of the internet.

In celebration of GAAD, Blackboard announced that its accessibility service, Ally, will expand beyond LMS and into all kinds of web pages. This makes Blackboard Ally for Websites a key tool for administrators in their quest to ensure that their content caters to every need. They can now use its scanning mechanism to validate accessibility features and attributes, from text-to-background contrast, to compatibility with supporting audio and tactile equipment.

Blackboard Ally uses machine learning to assess the level of accessibility of content and, if possible and necessary, create versions that are compatible with support systems and comply with general accessibility guidelines, such as WCAG 2.0. Last September, Ally was awarded the 2017 WOW Award for “applying an innovative, technology-based solution to a challenging educational need” by Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education’s Cooperative for Educational Technologies, one of the United States’ largest EdTech procurement consortiums in higher ed. Besides Blackboard’s own Learn and Moodlerooms, Ally is compatible with Moodle and Canvas LMS.
