The Book chapter auto-linking plugin by Matthew Davidson, a Moodler from the uncanny lands of Indiana, is one of the hundreds of small hidden gems waiting for users to find in the Moodle Plugin Directory. Davidson himself is the author of about half a dozen of them!
This simple tool works with Moodle Books available on the site or course. Within each book, it finds instances of the book’s chapter titles and converts them into links to said chapters. It was built to cut the habit in Davidson’s faculty (Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) to hard-code links to chapters, which inevitably wind up dead as soon as they are relocated for a new academic period. It is technically a Text Filter plugin type (it is in fact based off Moodle’s core filtering) with no customization features, which comes with the upside of no settings interface to deal with.
Installation and set up could not be simpler. Just make sure your Moodle site has at least one book where chapters reference one another by name to see it in action.
Book chapter auto-linking is one of the few from an agile developer who made sure it was compatible with Moodle 3.5 right before the major release’s launch, therefore earning the plugin an “Early Bird 3.5” badge.
The latest version of Book chapter auto-linking filter type plugin makes it compatible with Moodle 3.1 to 3.5. Download or install it from its official Moodle directory page.
