In 2017, the user figures for H5P revealed that the promising new interactive content protocol is on its way to becoming a standard for rich web content, particularly in learning interventions. Sites, users, authors, and sessions all shot up. Not only does H5P support more students every day, the number of new learners each day is about three times as large as it was at the beginning of last year. In Moodle, use of the H5P plugin also skyrocketed, going from 11 sites installed last January to 4,370 by December.

The plugin now allows for embedded H5P content (see video here and above) and setting passing grades on activities that link directly to the Moodle Gradebook.

For 2018, the development roadmap looks clear. H5P will strengthen its features and vision for a “Hub” where users can collaborate and exchange. Besides more content types, one of the most interesting details revealed is the announced availability of H5P as an evaluation or assessment tool, possibly fit for standardized testing.

Comparing Joubel, the Norwegian company that powers H5P, with Moodle HQ reveals interesting similarities. Both companies deliver an open source product that’s free for anyone to use and support. To Joubel, organizations request custom paid development. Like with Moodle, revenues from mostly commercial organizations are the main source of funding for development operations. Donations and government support are an important, secondary source. H5P’s own cloud-based solution, paralleling MoodleCloud, is planned to provide an additional income stream and, more importantly, serve as a testament to the quality and reliability of the software. Finally, the first H5P Con, just like MoodleMoots, has become a vital element in the consolidation of a global community of supporters and advocates. Coincidentally, the 2018 edition of H5P is confirmed to take place in Australia, Moodle’s place of birth.
