Blackboard Holds Analytics Symposium, The Bullseye On LMS Data | Con Simposio de Analítica, Blackboard Busca Apoderarse de los LMS de Datos

A reported 450 customers from all over the world, in person or via web, joined Blackboard Analytics Symposium on February 1st and 2nd to exchange “emerging and high impact practices.” Throughout the event, the company made evident how LMS data used for predictive modeling is their next frontier and, as some might agree, that of learning technologies and ecosystems as well.

The event was presided over by CEO Bill Ballhaus, followed by a keynote from Flinders University’s Deborah West. She is the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Learning and Teaching Innovation at the Adelaide, Australia, institution. In her keynote, she talked about the strategies she has used to “drive analytics adoption” both currently and at similar prior roles.

The bulk of the Symposium was made of talks in the energetic “5 in 5” presentation format, where professors from customer universities discuss the role of analytics in retention, attendance tracking, pedagogy, and more. Blackboard minds also shared their work, including of course Dr. John Whitmer, Learning Analytics and Research Director.

Phill Miller, VP of Teaching & Learning, closed the first morning with Blackboard’s road ahead in analytics. The afternoon was filled with themed talks, while on the second day technical workshops were scheduled.

The Symposium showed some promising results backed by scientific evidence on how technology can help drive student success, but it was also part marketing for proprietary solutions, with X-Ray Learning Analytics at the forefront.

Video on some of the talks might be available soon. In the meantime, enjoy the playlist for the 2017 Symposium, released in March.
