Although E-Submission (file submission) has been the dominant form of assignment submission for many years physical assignments will never completely go away.

Pieces of artwork are an obvious example and grading these in Moodle can be problematic. There are ways to handle this, for example by creating a dummy assignment or gradebook column in Moodle but the process is ad-hoc at best.

To remedy this a new plugin set has been developed that will allow:

1. Teachers to set “Physical Submission” as the assignment submission type:

2. Students to print off a cover sheet with assignment details and barcode:

3. Staff with the role / capability, to scan assignments to scan these barcodes into Moodle:

At the point cover sheets are scanned they are marked “submitted” in Moodle after which they can be graded like any other assignment

There are two plugins required for this:

  • assignsubmission_physical (assignment submission plugin)
  • local_barcode (form to scan assignments into the system)

The system has been designed to work with generic, off-the-shelf barcode scanners, making it an affordable solution to roll out across a school, college or university.

The scan form will work on Mobile devices using a bluetooth scanner.

The plugins are pending review on Moodle.Org (who have something of a backlog at the moment) but can be downloaded in the mean time from a GIT repository:
