Ample leads in Latin America, Oceania, and Europe more than make up for Moodle’s second place standing in North America and make the open source LMS 2017’s world leader. This is according to LMS usage data from LISTedTECH regarding existing installations.
The current standings, as compiled by e-Literate, are:
- Latin America: Moodle 67%, Blackboard 20%
- Europe: Moodle 57%, Blackboard 18%
- Oceania: Moodle 57%, Blackboard 28%
- North America: Blackboard 33%, Moodle 25%
This snapshot is prone to variations in coming years. e-Literate notes that rates of growth vary among vendors. In recent years, Canvas has done exceptionally well in getting new customers while the opposite seems true for Moodle and Blackboard.
Market analysts often overlook data for existing installations, which can hide large parts of the story only because it does not register as movement. In reality, much of the LMS technical development takes place in organizations with a long-term commitment to Moodle or other LMS. Institutions looking to acquire or review an LMS might find it worthwhile to ask about what has made the long relationships possible and what the educational and technological outcomes of the relationship are.
