How A Learning System Delivers Personalized Learning, And How It Doesn’t

Ellucian, an EdTech company focused on Student Information Systems, recently shared the results of its 1,000-student survey on the expectations of personalized learning and whether the existing landscape is up to the task.

The first series of outcomes from the survey involves the modalities of personalization. For students, a necessary condition of a personalized EdTech product is its ability to take them anywhere. Implicit in this answer is the mindset that the learning solution is expected to be device agnostic, meaning it should work on whatever devices the student is using at the time. 97% of respondents want their EdTech product to support them in class as well as outside of it.

Delving into the personalization of learning itself, the main finding is not surprising, but a tall order nonetheless: 94% of respondents state that personalization means making it trivially easy for them to perform the actions that support their learning, though respondents were well aware of the fact that these actions can be highly idiosyncratic. Some requests, however, are universal. Examples are the number of times a service requests access to personal information and having “one stop” app where they find information and communication tools. The subtext here seems to be a high value on engagement from the students.

Finally, a potentially striking revelation for administrators of education institutions is that 87% of students would choose to enroll in one place over another if, all else equal, one of them is considered more “tech savvy.”
