Before Moodle 3.3 dazzled us all with the new Course Overview, plenty of community resources went into devising strategies to make the welcoming dashboard more relevant and clean. While the new Course Overview makes it easy to know what to deal with first, for several Moodle versions now we have had the Collapsed Topics plugin, by Gareth Barnard, to simplify the navigation across Sections, Activities, and Resources. Collapsed Topics is one of the best answers to the infamous “Scroll of Death,” a dreadful issue in the LMS experience that’s starting to look like a thing of the past with each passing day.

Collapsed Topics hides content in plain sight, bringing relevant elements front and center. It works with “topic” or “week” course formats, toggling elements according to their relevance. A number of customization options are available.

The latest update comes with many fixes and new features, including:

  • Compatibility with Moodle 3.3 “Stealth Activities.”
  • Stylesheet fixes to make it look better with the “Boost” theme, the default for Moodle 3.2 and above.
  • An “Early Bird” badge, meaning it is ready to work with the latest Moodle 3.3.

Barnard is also proud to introduce The Complete Guide to Collapsed Topics, a comprehensive book covering “installation, upgrade, uninstallation, course and global features, resetting, capabilities, language strings, overriding icons/styles in a theme, and adding a new icon set”.

The latest release of Collapsed Topics is compatible with Moodle 3.3. Install or download it from the Moodle plugin directory.
