In a surprise announcement August 5th, Blackboard (Moodlerooms, RL UK, Netspot), Remote-Learner, Lambda Solutions and Nivel Siete, together launched a joint-working group initiative to advance the development, vetting and review of commercial and non-commercial 3rd party plugins for Moodle. In the past, each company managed its own plugin review process forcing vendors to adhere to multiple and disparate criteria to provide their Moodle plugins to share clientele of Moodle service providers and the likes of publishers, educational service providers and integration companies.
Now, through Partners of Open source Educational Technologies (POET) Working Group vendors can work through a streamlined process and be vetted by one company but accepted by all. According to the site the initiative was created,
to formulate common standards and guidelines that will improve and streamline the development process of plugins for Moodle, one of the most used learning management systems (LMS) in the world. The initiative is supported by Moodle PTY, the independent company behind the Moodle project.
