FreeMoodle.org is a Partner-backed free Moodle hosting site available to teachers and student with just one catch: courses must be open.
I got a chance to checkout the site and play around with some of the courses already there. I can say that HRDNZ has really set the stage for something wonderful. Already there are quite a few courses on the site in various states of construction. Stuart Mealor did share a few “goodies” with me to check out. Once registered you too can be a lurker, learn from the OER on the site and get some inspiration for your own course design from the various approaches featured. One particular course I checked out was: 101 great nights of film by Randy Thornton [http://www.freemoodle.org/course/view.php?id=22] which has extensive use of conditional activities and completion marking.
If you’re looking to create your own open course you can make a quick request and generally approval is met within 48 hours.
For end users, while the main page does have lots of good information for you, since this is Moodle 2.x you can utilize the “My Home” page as well (fully customizable). Personally I prefer it as the default.
In short: FreeMoodle.org is great for sharing resources and running open courses, professional development and browsing other course designs.
