Jon Fila, the coordinator and creator of Moodleshare.com (on Twitter at @moodleshare) is also hosting courses that are shared and available for download at http://courses.moodleshare.com. He’s recently posted a few new courses, including

Downloads of the courses’ backup files are available in each course so that you can restore them to your own Moodle!

Thanks to Helen Foster (@moodlehelen) for originally posting the details.

Http://demo.moodle.net has around two dozen courses that you can download and use due to their CC licenses. Most of the courses are a product of the “Cool Course Competition” which occurred earlier this year (more info about the Cool Course Comp: http://www.moodlemonthly.com/tag/cool-courses/).

The courses available cover 13 different languages and a great many topics. One of my personal favorite courses to peruse is the “Higher Education Film Studies Module“.

To download a course you’ll need to login as Administrator or an Editing Teacher, access the course and use the backup course options in the Administration block. Login credentials are located on the front page of the site or conveniently on the login page: http://demo.moodle.net/login/index.php.

The good news, we would be on TV and would have over 15 million viewers weekly! The bad news, the elimination rounds would be brutal. Long lines of Moodlers circling the outside of stadiums, trying to acquire a wireless signal to tweet their experiences. Ryan Seacrest interviewing the most bizarre of contestants before they show their sites to the judges. Like the course designed for Judge Judy fans, the How to Get on Judge Judy Course, which did not get past the Moodle bailiff.

Next step is for the viewers to call 1-900-Moodle # to vote on their favorite courses. Once we spent all our minutes and monies to vote for Uncle Bob’s Antique Refinishing Course, the real judges step in, and this is what they thought about the Coolest of the Cool Courses.

Best Application of Moodle Activities.
1st – Stuart Mealor with Concepts of ICT
Judge Randy “DOG!, I love the acronyms. But, we’re talking about activities, and DOG, your activities bark, fierce! I loved the Learning Diary and your “How big is your hard drive” choice activity. “

Best Use of Media
1st – Edward Pickering-Symes with Climate Change Course
Judge Kara D “ I love your choice of media. The interactive map quiz is awesome. The Detective kit is way cool and Clim City is just plain hot!

Primary & Secondary
Primary: 1st – Christine Pannen with Deep Blue – rund um die Ozeane der Welt
Secondary: 1st – Martin Kurz with IT-Unterricht
Judge Ellen: “I love these sites! I can’ t read German, but, I love these sites! I love the looks, it works for kids and teenagers. And, it works for adults like me, who act like kids. I’m sure I can’t do justice to your sites, so I wont try. I do appreciate your efforts, and I understand your audiences. Nice job!

Tertiary
1st – Janina Dewitz with eLearning and Moodle Essentials +++Lite+++
Judge Simon: “I’m going to make this brief, brilliant!” The slide share/show of “The Art of Instant Moodles”, is perfect. Great educational lesson on copyright, I can relate to wanting to protect my work. But, the top piece by far is your file management lesson, superb!”

Overall, all courses are wonderful and there is a lesson to be learned from each and everyone one of them.
Give a shout out to @moodlehelen and everyone who helped with the competition. They deserve a huge thank you and congratulations. Voting for the Cool Course Competition ends this Friday (February 19th). So if you haven’t voted yet, go to http://coolcourses.moodle.org/ and do your part.

Cool Course Competition Judging Period Extended

The Cool Course Competition put on by Moodle.org recently extended the deadline to judge courses to February 19th, 2010. So if you’re still interested in checking out some awesome Moodle courses and voicing your opinion as to which deserve to “take the cake”, visit http://coolcourses.moodle.org/ to cast your votes.

Note that this has some pretty hefty prize money attached to it: 1st place in each category receives $200 (USD) to spend in the Moodle Shop (http://www.cafepress.com/moodle/), 2nd place receives $50 and 3rd $25. That’s some sweet merch.

Cool Courses Competition at Moodle.org

Helen Foster, Moodler at Moodle HQ is leading an initiative to deem the coolest Moodle course in all the land. The “Cool Course Competition” began in October and will finish in January 2010 (after a 1 month extension) asks that Moodle course designers submit their courses (in any language) to be judged for a prize and claim to having the “coolest Moodle course”.

Since commencing, The Cool Course Competition has attracted nearly two dozen submissions in seven languages (!).

The competition officially ends 1/19/10 and the prize will include merchandise from Moodle’s official Cafepress shop (http://www.cafepress.com/moodle)

Contest Rules:

The Cool Course Competition is open to all Moodlers except for Moodle.com employees.
You may enter as many courses in the competition as you wish.
You may enter your course in one competition category only. Categories are as follows:
- Best application of Moodle activities
- Best use of media
- Primary (ages 6-12)
- Secondary (ages 12-18)
- Tertiary (ages 18+)
Your course may be in any language.
Your course must include at least 3 different types of activity e.g. a forum, a quiz and a wiki
Your course may not include user data. (Ideally courses would be judged with user data, though unfortunately this is not feasible, as each course participant would need to give permission for their activity to be published.)
Your course may not use contributed modules or blocks. Only modules and blocks included in standard Moodle packages may be used.
The maximum size for a course backup zip file is 32MB.
All course content must be either open source or or available under one of the Creative Commons licenses.
You must have the authority to publish the course under one of the Creative Commons licenses i.e. you have created the course yourself or you have permission from the course creator.
Real courses currently available on demo.moodle.org may also be entered in the competition.
By entering a course in the competition, you agree for your course to be hosted on demo.moodle.org and available for others to download.
Moodle.com reserves the right to amend the competition and the competition rules if necessary.
