NewSchoolLearning, an official Moodle Partner, is holding a theme development contest where not only could your theme be a part of the core Moodle 2.0 but you can win a nifty new iPad!

All submissions are due by July 9th, 2010 (midnight EST); even if you can’t create a theme though you can join in as a community judge during the review (7/12-7/15).

Voting for the Cool Course Competition ends this Friday (February 19th). So if you haven’t voted yet, go to http://coolcourses.moodle.org/ and do your part.

Cool Course Competition Judging Period Extended

The Cool Course Competition put on by Moodle.org recently extended the deadline to judge courses to February 19th, 2010. So if you’re still interested in checking out some awesome Moodle courses and voicing your opinion as to which deserve to “take the cake”, visit http://coolcourses.moodle.org/ to cast your votes.

Note that this has some pretty hefty prize money attached to it: 1st place in each category receives $200 (USD) to spend in the Moodle Shop (http://www.cafepress.com/moodle/), 2nd place receives $50 and 3rd $25. That’s some sweet merch.

Cool Course Competition Closed

The Moodle.org Cool Course Competition recently ended (1/19) and 50 courses were submitted to be judged in five categories:

Best Application of Moodle Activities
Best use of Media
Primary
Secondary
Tertiary

The courses are currently open to be judged by the public (you need only a Moodle.org account to participate). Each category has a quick and easy Choice activity set up to record votes. All course are open to review and check out, though no user data has been included except for Glossary and Database entries.

There are particularly good courses which would make for excellent examples to show teachers the possibilities of Moodle course construction. There are even two courses (one in English, the other en Espagñol) by @MariaMoodle on using multimedia effectively in the classroom. If you’re interested in making your Moodle ‘pop’ with flash and embedded media, it’s one of the best resources around.

Note that all courses are licensed with a Creative Commons License.

Here are the MoodleMonthly picks for Best of…

Best Application of Moodle Activities – Higher Education Film Studies Module: great pictures and contextual arrangement. Uses Choice, Lessons, Forums and Chats to engage students.
Best use of Media – Grade 12 Physics: comprehensive and a great use of OER and video embedded into quizzes.
Primary – Mystery Moodle Fun: great, fun and age appropriate aesthetics.
Secondary – Honors Chemistry Spring Semester: comprehensive and methodically organized. This course has great visual cues for what is due and when.
Tertiary – eLearning and Moodle Essentials (LITE): well organized with contextual descriptions of information, anyone new to Moodle would benefit from this course–not just because of the content, but how the content is arranged.

Cool Courses Competition at Moodle.org

Helen Foster, Moodler at Moodle HQ is leading an initiative to deem the coolest Moodle course in all the land. The “Cool Course Competition” began in October and will finish in January 2010 (after a 1 month extension) asks that Moodle course designers submit their courses (in any language) to be judged for a prize and claim to having the “coolest Moodle course”.

Since commencing, The Cool Course Competition has attracted nearly two dozen submissions in seven languages (!).

The competition officially ends 1/19/10 and the prize will include merchandise from Moodle’s official Cafepress shop (http://www.cafepress.com/moodle)

Contest Rules:

The Cool Course Competition is open to all Moodlers except for Moodle.com employees.
You may enter as many courses in the competition as you wish.
You may enter your course in one competition category only. Categories are as follows:
- Best application of Moodle activities
- Best use of media
- Primary (ages 6-12)
- Secondary (ages 12-18)
- Tertiary (ages 18+)
Your course may be in any language.
Your course must include at least 3 different types of activity e.g. a forum, a quiz and a wiki
Your course may not include user data. (Ideally courses would be judged with user data, though unfortunately this is not feasible, as each course participant would need to give permission for their activity to be published.)
Your course may not use contributed modules or blocks. Only modules and blocks included in standard Moodle packages may be used.
The maximum size for a course backup zip file is 32MB.
All course content must be either open source or or available under one of the Creative Commons licenses.
You must have the authority to publish the course under one of the Creative Commons licenses i.e. you have created the course yourself or you have permission from the course creator.
Real courses currently available on demo.moodle.org may also be entered in the competition.
By entering a course in the competition, you agree for your course to be hosted on demo.moodle.org and available for others to download.
Moodle.com reserves the right to amend the competition and the competition rules if necessary.
