The presentation covers the history of the project and their focus going forward.  It’s roots are in mobile health coordination and education efforts in rural country settings.  But it’s blossomed into a highly anticipated iPhone and Android application.

No date on when the app will be publicly available has surfaced yet, but perhaps this presentation will mark and important milestone signifying it’s impending release.  Try it out by pointing your mobile browser at http://iphone.moodle.com.au.

This session will describe the pilot phase in which physicians located in 20 urban and peripheral Peruvian HIV clinics use ten Nokia N95s and ten iPhones equipped with portable solar chargers. The mobile phone system distributes critical reading, module revision, and suggested reading along with the clinical modules’ discussion. Though the mobile educational platform, MLE Moodle, originally supported the learning events and tracked students’ progress, during the mid-term evaluation, the physicians expressed their difficulties in using it. Taking into account their opinions, and after assessing the existing Mobile moodles, IMTAvH decided to develop their own mobile Moodle system. You will see the software they created that solves all the difficulties that the physicians had. They hope to launch this open-source mobile version during the conference.

There’s a quick new video that highlights the process of adding a new Moodle icon to an iPhone/iPod home screen for Moodle4iPhone enabled sites. For capable Apple products it’s  a very simple process:

For Android handsets

The process on Android is a little bit more complicated, but the end result is a simple 1-click shortcut on your home screen to the Moodle site of your choice.

Here are the basic steps:

1. Use the browser to access the site.
2. Save the site as a bookmark (use the menu button)
3. Access your home screen (one with enough room for an additional link)
4. Long touch an empty area of the screen
5. touch “Shortcuts” to access a list of possible shortcuts
6. Choose “Bookmark”
7. Choose your saved bookmark.

Note: when released, Moodle sites will have the ability to use their own “icon” so that a student could have several Moodle icons on their home screen (all designated to open a separate Moodle site).

This project has grown from a collaboration between the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp and the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Peru toto include Learning Design Japan and two Moodle rock-stars in Lewis Carr and Julian Ridden (Julian hails from Pukunui Technology).
