Read the full brief at https://ecampus.fiu.edu/whatsnewmoodle2.php.

Features include:

A new way to nav

Docking

New file picker

New text editor

Activity tracking/completion

Conditional Activities

Blogs

Messaging

Comments (everywhere)

New quiz features (question flagging)

In addition they have much more in-depth tutorials that cover the new features in easy to read “Moodle Quick Guides”. A treasure trove of “Moodle 2-torials”.

Zebra is a great customizable theme that allows easy color changes and other customizations right from the Admin panel. It’s been upgraded and released as Zebra 2.1 recently, bringing a fresh look with the same control. Change colors, logos, background images and more through the Admin panel and with FTP access.

I tried it out and used http://www.colorpicker.com/ to edit the colors to my linking. Check it out yourself by downloading it from http://moodle.org/plugins/pluginversions.php?plugin=theme_zebra.

As a bonus, Danny Wahl (theme creator) has built-in some of the responsive design that Stuart highlighted in my previous post (resizing the window changes how the columns display).

Gavin Henrick (@ghenrick) has a great white paper out about themes in Moodle 2.0. He highlights and points out all of the things you should consider when thinking of upgrading from 1.9 or simply making the jump to the new Moodle platform. As you may know, themes are a lot different in Moodle 2, providing dockable navigation and full flexibility for developers to make the sites look different from Moodle’s traditional sidebar-body-sidebar 3 column layout.

A few highlights from the white paper which I highly recommend as quick lunch-time reading material:

Gavin breaks down each of the standard Moodle themes and some of the 3rd party contributions to let readers know which can be customized (and how) from the Administration panel;

There are some really great examples in the appendix of cool Moodle sites (including the usual suspects: Newbury, Leeds, iMoot, etc);

Good overview of theme settings and possibilities in Moodle 2 (how many columns, where they are, docks, etc.)

For more information or to grab a copy of the white paper go to http://www.somerandomthoughts.com/blog/.

My personal favorite (and new to me) is this really great login screen at University of Canberra (which changes each time you visit). It’s the little things that make a big difference aesthetically: https://learnonline.canberra.edu.au/login/index.php. Where’s your favorite Moodle 2.o theme?

This is a really unique course format that allows course topic sections to be identified with a specific image. The Grid View allocates an image to each topic area and when clicked from the course homepage a nifty popup appears highlighting the information held within. It’s easy to use, easy to configure and is a great way to simplify course navigation (cutting down on the number of page loads and all but eliminating the “scroll of death”). Grid View was originally maintained by Paul Krix according to the old Moodle.org plug-in repository; its new entry is maintained by Julian Ridden: http://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_grid. Pros:

for both 1.9 and 2.0+

easy to configure

still supports blocks

aesthetically oriented

no page loads navigating to topics

no scroll of death

intuitive

easy to edit/configure

Cons:

default limit of 2 columns (though some images and screenshots show more) Updated 11/2: It seems that this is tied to the theme and version. On 1.9 with the Foodle theme I was able to get 6 columns on a wide screen (see it here)

Download it from http://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_grid. To check out more course format reviews and screen shots visit http://www.moodlenews.com/course-formats/.

I love course formats and lately I’ve seen some really cool ones. Here is the OneTopic format for Moodle 2.0 which provides a tabbed format (similar to the Animated Slide and Tabbed formats we’ve seen previously). The tabs can each have a custom name (so you can increase the navigability of your courses with text cues) and it’s automatically formatted by the number of course topics you have, which is a bit of a misnomer (as there are obviously more than one topic contrary to what the format’s name suggests).

Cool stuff:

Easy to use and pretty slick.

Blocks are persistent throughout the course which is nice

The “jump to…” option gives alternate navigate through courses

Customizable tab names

Colors match your theme

Current tab is identified by a different color

Download the format from here: http://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_onetopic. Install it to the course/formats folder for your Moodle and voila!

Here’s a cool new theme based on the Aarvark 2.1 theme released earlier this summer by Shaun Daubney. The slight variation is called “Postit” and was developed and released by Mary Evans, moderator of the Moodle Themes forum on Moodle.org. According to Mary,

This is a re-make of the original Aardvark 2.1 theme which Shaun created, and I have added to it.

This theme is a fluid width, three column Moodle 2 theme, which allows blocks to be moved into the Profile Bar

Along with Aardvark 2.1, this theme incorporates the expandable profile menu which has quick link shortcuts to the most used tools in Moodle (messages, calendar, courses, private files, etc.). The latter addition of blocks to the profile bar is pretty neat, students could add any of the default blocks or perhaps later Google Docs repository block or any HTML embed-able code.

It’s pretty slick. Download your copy today from: http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=26&rid=5042

Here’s a really awesome use of Moodle: embedding a complete website and all of it’s HTML/videos/link structure, etc. This provides a secure environment, protecting your website creation and also keeps students within your Moodle course. I use the same process for linking to Articulate presentations (some 200 slides with audio!) just by zipping up the converted file then uploading it to a directory in a Moodle course.

Check out the great video tutorial and examples below. Note that the video highlights the process in Moodle 2.0 but course files in 1.9 also supports this process.
