FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Title:  WizIQ Announces Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for Teachers: Teach Online with Moodle, WizIQ, and Google Drive

Chandigarh, India

WizIQ recently announced that it is hosting a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for teachers, who wish to teach online using Moodle and other web technologies such as WizIQ and Google Drive, commencing on June 1, 2013. The self-paced 4-week course aims to get teachers and anyone interested in teaching online, acquainted with WizIQ and Moodle as a course and learning management system.

The course will combine both asynchronous and synchronous elements. The synchronous will include 5 live online classes with recordings, content (tips and tricks), and discussions. The live online classes will be delivered via the WizIQ Virtual Classroom on Saturdays at 10 AM (EST) and recordings of these classes will be available for future reference, in case somebody misses a class or would like to review the content.

The MOOC will be led by Dr. Nellie Deutsch and facilitated by Dr. Ludmila Smirnova, Dr. Nancy Zingrone, Dr. Ramesh Sharma, and Judith Behrens (doctoral student).

Participants will be able to engage with the facilitators, each other, and the content on WizIQ in the MOOC course area. Unlike the traditional MOOCs that stress content and course delivery, Moodle MOOC will focus on active learning, reflection, sharing, and collaboration. It will enable participants to learn how Moodle can be used in fully online, blended learning, and the flipped class, through meaningful connections and social interactions.

Participants will be able to receive support and ask questions in advance and throughout the course in the course feed (discussion forum) in the course area on WizIQ and through a google drive document.

  • This is not the first Moodle MOOC.

The first Moodle MOOC has been running for about 10 years, and currently has about 9000 active participants. You can join in at https://moodle.org/course/view.php?id=5. Many people have learned a lot there.

I think it comes down to semantics, I would agree that Moodle.org’s using Moodle course is a MOOC, but the C might stand for Community rather than Course in the modern sense of MOOCs. No deliverables, schedule or activities to consume other than engaging in the forums and discussion. Though that is possibly the most valuable trove of Moodle related info aside from the docs.
