Course Format for 1.9 and 2: Grid View

This is a really unique course format that allows course topic sections to be identified with a specific image.  The Grid View allocates an image to each topic area and when clicked from the course homepage a nifty popup appears highlighting the information held within.  It’s easy to use, easy to configure and is a great way to simplify course navigation (cutting down on the number of page loads and all but eliminating the “scroll of death”). Grid View was originally maintained by Paul Krix according to the old Moodle.org plug-in repository; its new entry is maintained by Julian Ridden: http://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_grid. Pros:

  • for both 1.9 and 2.0+
  • easy to configure
  • still supports blocks
  • aesthetically oriented
  • no page loads navigating to topics
  • no scroll of death
  • intuitive
  • easy to edit/configure
Cons:
  • default limit of 2 columns (though some images and screenshots show more) Updated 11/2: It seems that this is tied to the theme and version.  On 1.9 with the Foodle theme I was able to get 6 columns on a wide screen (see it here)
Download it from http://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=format_grid.  To check out more course format reviews and screen shots visit http://www.moodlenews.com/course-formats/.
