The Zebra theme was released a little while ago by Danny Wahl, but it’s such a strikingly gorgeous theme that I had to give it a try on my own site. The theme is a mod of Aardvark (already one of my favorite Moodle themes) and includes some great characteristics such as,
- Dropdown menu system
- The Moodle Bar [details]
- The Aardvark user profile picture
- Easily customizable theme colors
- Fresh icon set
Most aspects of this theme are editable and the comments within the theme files are a huge help for the non-tech savvy. For example it’s relatively easy to see how and where to edit the dropdown menu links:
It’s also as easy to edit the theme colors. In fact they have 5 color scheme ingredients laid out for you in the colors.php file
Here’s a sample of what the theme looks like with the “Cola” color configuration.

As you can see there are still some similarities between the two themes, but Zebra retains the old li floating menu instead of the fancy YUI one. I chose the name zebra for a couple of reasons. The first being to represent that it was a fork from Aardvark (A-Z, get it?) and the second being to goof on the fact that I added easy color schemes to it, so it’s more than black and white. I don’t want to brag but MoodleNews called it “AWESOME“. [...]
